“If we don’t let our weirdness rise to the surface, we don’t let our work stand out.” ~Paul Jarvis
I started Communications Rebel because I believe that living out our weirdness, as author and web designer Paul Jarvis puts it, is the answer to a successful business or brand.
What Paul calls “weirdness”, I call “true voice”. You know best what you stand for. You know your convictions. And you also know your values and the principles you live by best.
All of that – plus your story, the origins of your business idea and the “why” behind your endeavor are ingredients of your “true voice”. You have a unique personality and so has the brand you’re creating.
Let Your Audience See You For Who You Are
Some might call it weirdness; some might call it uniqueness. Others might refer to it as authenticity. Call it as you may…the truer you are to yourself, the easier it will be for your audience to “see” you for who you are.
Your story, your personality and your true voice will shine through everything that you do. The result? You will stand out; your brand will be more noticeable. Your uniqueness will find an audience that is hungry for what you have to offer – because people will get you. They will trust you. They will be inspired by you.
Own Your True Voice
In fact, committing to your true voice is the only way you can stand out. When I was managing communications for Emperor’s College, a Los Angeles Oriental medicine school, I’d often hear students of acupuncture being worried about opening their own practice and creating their brand. “There are so many other acupuncturists in LA,” they would say.
You can stand out – even in the most crowded field of experts all offering the “same” service. How? Owning your true voice. Expressing your weirdness. One Los Angeles acupuncturist who is doing just that is Russell Brown, LAc, from Poke Acupuncture. Brown not only tells his story with brutal honesty, his practice also reflects his eclectic taste and personality. Poke Acupuncture is an Oriental medicine practice like no other, and that’s why Brown stands out from the crowd.
Embrace Your Weirdness
Don’t you even dare try fitting in. A brand that fits in is like a needle in a haystack: undetectable.
Be a communications rebel instead. Embrace your weirdness and your true voice, and make a noise in the world. The world needs you.
Rebel on –
Nina
